David has had a fascination for the 1924 Buick ever since he can remember and attributes that to the fact that his Great Grandfather once owned a 1924 Buick (pictured) David had known of the existence of his '24 for some years and apparently it has spent most of its life in the area. In fact he can recall the car from his boyhood when his parents were members of the Gippsland Historic Automobile Club. The car's history is not fully known but apparently in the 30's it was owned by a Publican in Trafalgar who had a chauffeur drive her everywhere (obviously pubs were a good business even back then). He was talking
to the owner and discussing the Buick one day and relating to his
connection with this model saying that one day he hoped to find one
he could own. Not long ago when he was at an event with the '24 a woman came over to speak to David and said she recalled a childhood experience of riding in the car when her parents owned it. She recalled playing cards many years ago on the narrow fold down table that is attached to the rear of the front seat. The Buick is in lovely condition with only a repaint some years ago. David has only had to do some minor maintenance jobs on the car and the interior is in lovely original condition. Even the hood is original and looks near new. David has used the car for occasional outings with the longest run taking an hour. The '24 will cruise around 50mph and being the big series rides very nicely. To the best of David's knowledge this is the only one of these models on the road in Australia and he hopes to keep it on the road for many years to come. |

Buick 8/40 Sedan

David
first purchased a 1938 Buick at the age of 15, obviously hr had got
the Buick Bug at an early age.
He had intended to restore it but when looking for parts he and his father came across a '37 Special which was part of a collection of cars advertised in the Age that was being sold by Lloyd Hughes in the Dandenongs near Melbourne. Remember when Saturday's age was THE publication to read first thing Saturday morning? The '37 was in better condition than the '38 and fairly complete so it was decided to change plans and restore the '37 instead and part with the '38. David enthusiastically tackled the project and promptly had the body off the chassi completely rebuilding the mechanics and repairing the body. The car was painted and back together by the time he was 18. But then, as most 18 year olds are, he became distracted with other things in life. I won't divulge David's age but suffice to say that a number of years have passed since that 18th birthday and the Buick for most of that time has had to take a back seat while other priorities took over. The colour David chose is a pastel Green similar to that seen on some late 50's Holdens. Since the original
work was undertaken David has had some repainting and mechanical work
done. The car is near
to being on the road, So hopefully we will have another classic Buick
on the road in the not too distant future. |
